Raksha Nepal, Nepal

Over the last few days, our volunteer coordinator Meagan traveled with art kits to Nepal. The art kits went to the 32 children living at Raksha Nepal, an incredible organization that works to free women and children from sexual slavery. These children live in a building with no running water and sleep on the hard ground because their beds are filled with bed bugs. They all have big dreams and are incredibly inspiring survivors of some of the worst human rights abuses we have ever heard. Raksha has given us permission to use these photos and has asked that we share some of the children’s stories.
photo 2Mohit (showing me that he made a sleeping person) was abandoned in Everest Region at age 1.5 years old after his mother committed suicide following her sexual assault. His brother (age 3) kept the boys alive by building a shelter and eating dirt and bugs. The spent a year enduring starvation, hypothermia, and exposure before being rescued by Raksha Nepal.

The pipe cleaners were a huge hit!

Qualfon is an international provider of call center services with 16 operations in 6 countries, including Fort Collins, COlorado (the birthplace of COW!). COW partnered with Qualfon to distribute art kits to those in need dear different Qualfon locations around the world. Robin Normal is the Busness Development Executive for Qualfon. She delivered 65 art kits to orphans that Qualfon supports near its operations in Georgetown, Guyana, South America during the week of July 7, 2014. Thank you Robin and Qualfon!

ART Night

Last night was our ART Night at Greeley Transitional! The kids absolutely loved it and everyone was eager to know when we would be coming back. In the spirit of Spring and new beginnings, we all painted clay flower pots. We left a big bag of potting soil and plenty of garden seeds so that tomorrow during Group Therapy, everyone will be able to plant their seeds in their specific pot! Our next ART Night is on July 22 and we hope people can join us there!

Venecia, Nicaragua

Twenty art kits were distributed May 13th at the elementary school in the small coffee farming community of Venecia, Nicaragua. Venecia is a small community in the northern part of Nicaragua where farmers mainly rely on coffee farming for their income. The art kits were distributed to the best students from several grades in the small elementary school in the community.

Refugee Mural Project

The Refugee Mural Project was a huge success! Looking at the mural we painted, the black images are symbolic of what represents each person who helped. Some students picked to write their native language, some took symbols from their village, some took important cultural activities (i.e. the fishing boat). It was so rewarding to watch everyone out there having a great time and opening up about their personal journeys. The art kits were a huge hit, everyone was excited to take one, two, or three! Due to budget cuts in Greeley, refugee students are losing some important services so it was great that we could play a small part in this!
